Whether you are just starting out in Buddhism, or have recently moved, finding a Buddhist group or temple is always important so you can continue your growth.
One search that is always a good try is to use Google Maps (https://maps.google.com/). Enter a search term of “Buddhist” and see what’s around you. Also try other search terms such as “Buddhism” and “Temple”.
Here are some other ways you can find a group near where you live:
- Buddhanet’s World Buddhist Directory: All types of Buddhism. http://www.buddhanet.info/wbd/
If there was a ‘phone directory’ of the Buddhist world, this is it. You’ll find pretty much everything in this one site, although with anything so encompassing some groups may no longer be in existence so you’ll need to check.
- Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA). Humanistic Buddhism. The worldwide group of Fo Guang Shan (one of the largest Buddhist groups in the world) and Ven. Master Hsing Yun.
- Soka Gakkai International (SGI). Nichiren Buddhism. This is another worldwide Buddhist organization originally founded in Japan.
- Plum Village.Zen/Humanistic Buddhism. Plum Village was started by Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh, and now has groups worldwide affiliated with it. The main website is at www.plumvillage.org. The Worldwide Plum Village Directory: http://www.plumvillage.org/component/sobi2/
